A Day in the Studio

The faces are not shown in order to protect the innocent!

Today, I have to be in the studio.  I thought it might be interesting for you to see some commission work, and to see what I do when I’m not painting by bicycle.  Above you will see a detail from a “Chamber Painting”. This style requires an artist to be able to paint the full figure and an interior.  The challenge is to make the figure live in the space. The interior has to be enticing, but cannot steal the show.  These two children posed in their Sunday best, but the mom allowed them to go without shoes.  The brother wore socks, and the little girl had on knitted wool house shoes with fringed pom-poms.   The painting measures 24″x30″, which is a large format for me.

I know that I promised to return to talking about painting technique.  Please check back later and I will begin that discussion quite soon.

Would you like for me to continue with posts such as the one entitled: “A Smattering about Painting Technique”?  Comments would certainly be appreciated and might motivate me to open this boiling vat…~Lavanna Martin

I am loving the zebra print, which is complex yet brings attention to the feet of the children. I love the “Sunday Best” with the slippers, because children will be children, and find ways to find comfort even in the most stuffy of situations.
