I painted this portrait for my upcoming show. After April 4th, I will be back in the coffee houses painting people “live”.
The sun can be brutal here in Texas – I used to try and force my portraits into the false, ambient lighting that you can only get in the North. Then, I had a break-through. I decided to just go with the harshness. It gives an honest account of my roots, since I come from a long line of Irish/English cowpunchers and dirt farmers.
What do you think?

I just stumbled onto your blog and absolutely love it. In fact I now have a desire to go hang out at all the coffee shops you go to just to see if you would happen to decide to do a painting of me and post it on here. Your pieces are extraordinary. Keep up the good work.
Hey, Jennifer.
Good timing – you caught me on the computer, updating my BLOGUS MAXIMUS!
Thanks for that, really. I’ve been kind of down lately – studio work does that to me. Can hardly wait to get out to the coffee houses again.
I’m thinking about putting some kind of updates on the blog, telling where I will be on a given day. There is so much more that I want to do!
Also, if you want to follow me on Twitter, my username is: lavannamartin. I haven’t figured out how to add the widget, yet.
Thanks,
~Lavanna
Love how the face was handled in this painting.
