I Painted This Artsy Man at Quack’s

I painted him on a Saturday at Quack’s.   He popped in and sat down two tables away from me,  providing the perfect distance and profile pose to paint him.  It was a very quick oil sketch, but I think that I captured him and his impish personality.  He came over to see what I […]

I Painted Two Customers at Quack’s Bakery and Coffee

She was just lovely in silver-blue, with sun-glasses on her head. I always call these women the “Horse women” – the Barbara Stanwick, no-nonsense good-looks. They always have those fine-bone structures, but these are rock solid, no-nonsense women. They age beautifully, and can let their hair go silver. The student next to her had great hair. I was afraid that he was going to cut out early, but I got him in the painting, luckily. Behind them you will see the first two type-writer buttons of the Italian restaurant, ASTI.

I Painted Ashley Dancing at the Spider House

I loved painting this at the Spider House.   Ashleigh was walking back toward the steps of the deck to place a customer’s order, and she just did this quick dance move to the music.  It was so delightful and free, I just had to capture it.  I must have painted her in less than […]

The Sensual Line of the Rapid Oil Sketch

This is an example of the  very rapid, warp 10/volume 11 sketch.  As people are waiting for their drink orders at the counter, I try and paint them.  I have anywhere from one to three minutes to capture the gesture.  It is a tricky business.  One cannot falter, and precision and rhythm of line is […]

I Painted People at Epoch Coffee in the KaffeeHaus Style

I finally stopped whining about the lack of good places to sit to paint in Epoch.  There are only two tables at Epoch Coffee that are located at a natural light source.  At every other table, I am staring into the store-front glass – which causes terrible problems when judging colors – well, you just […]

I Painted Him at the Spider House

I painted this man at the Spider House.  He had on a white box-tailed button-down shirt, leggings, and white mules.  I saw him again a few days later at Cafe Medici (another coffee house) in a similar outfit.

Portrait Vignette of Lacey at Cafe Caffeine

Paintings of People at Cafe Caffeine

I have one more painting of Lacey Roop that I will download tomorrow.  I haven’t heard her perform at the poetry slams here in Austin, but she won this year’s competition in the city.  Ryan, her coworker tells me that she is amazing, and that her poems are “classical and romantic”.  I was quite happy […]

Painting From Life at a Coffee House

I painted this beautiful man from life at Spider House Coffee here in Austin, TX.  I loved his dreadlocks.  Painting from life is always tricky, because you don’t know how long people will stay, or stay put!   As an artist,  I never rely on photography, but paint the figure “live”. Here is another painting […]
